It is time for KBOO’s fall membership drive, and to celebrate, on this coming Monday’s show (October 5th — set your outlook calendars) I am going to be playing nothing but The Cure for 2 and one-half hours**. And not that jumpy happy Friday I’m In Love Cure, we’re talking the pitch-black nachtmuzik that they release when they’re not making commercial hits. I’ll spend alot of time playing stuff from the beginning of this band’s career, and during the last half hour or so we’ll hear what this band has been up to lately. Tune in to KBOO to hear this, and become a member while you’re at it! Our financial goal for this drive is $135,000. We need your support! Thanks!

**what does The Cure have to do with KBOO’s membership drive? I don’t know. My show is on late at night, it’s dark out, and I think the moody music of The Cure is a good fit and would therefore make a good subject for a radio special.

As part of KBOO’s fall membership drive, I will be featuring a Cure retrospective on October 5th. 150 minutes of nothing but cure, starting from their days as Easy Cure in 1976, through punk, pop, and goth, all the way up to their present incarnation as stadium alternatrockers.

matt keating co-host on this monday’s anodyne

ANODYNE welcomes NYC-based singer/songwriter Matt Keating to the KBOO studios August 17th. Matt’s music melds the country feel of Willie Nelson with the classic songwriter sounds of a Ron Sexsmith or an Elvis Costello. New York Times says that “his tunes are clear-cut, and his confessions and uncertainty ring true”. Matt will co-host, spinning some of his favorite tracks and also playing live versions of songs from his new EP “Between Customers” 3-5:30am.

Expect a few tributes to Jim Dickinson and Les Paul, two musical legends who passed away this week.

150 minutes of local rock tomorrow AM

Good news! The 2009 PDX Pop Now! compilation is out this week! It seems like the perfect time to pull out ALL SIX PDX Pop Now compilations and throw together a local music show.

PDX Pop Now began in 2004, it is a non-profit org that produces this amazing festival each summer. All local music, free to the public (all ages). Each year they also release a two-disc compilation of local music.

Here’s a good guess of some bands I’ll be playing on the show this morning: Viva Voce, Sleater-Kinney, Thermals, YACHT, The Blow, Talkdemonic, Shaky Hands, Menomena, Syndel.

one year on kboo

“What do I play next?” is my favorite question as a KBOO DJ. It’s like one of those “Choose Your Own Adventure” books that I looked at as a kid. Every once in awhile, I’ll have a revelatory moment or a hunch that pays off with a satisfying combination of songs.

This coming Monday I will celebrate one year as a radio host on KBOO by featuring as many of these moments as I can fit. Also during the year I’ve had five musical guests on my show, and I’ll be featuring some favorite songs from those sessions. (By the way, they were Kristi Martel, Matt Keating, Rose Polenzani, Boy Eats Drum Machine, and Super XX Man)

This special program coincides with KBOO’s spring membership drive, so if ANODYNE has enhanced the quality of your late-night/early-morning hours, please become a member today. Simply put, KBOO cannot broadcast without you.

soft boys / robyn hitchcock retrospective re-airs on monday

Robyn Hitchcock celebrates birthday #56 on March 3. I’ll be re-airing last fall’s Soft Boys / Robyn Hitchcock retrospective on Monday’s show in honor of this occasion.

I plan on re-tooling it a bit so that it’ll end with a track from Robyn’s brand new album “Goodnight Oslo”.

I’ll also be giving away a copy of “Goodnight Oslo” on cd, check out the twitter account on Monday morning for details.
